AGRA, India (AFP) – Indian police on Wednesday raised the number of people killed in a bus fire in northern India to 63.
The fire was set off when sparks from a burst tyre ignited the vehicle's fuel tank 75 kilometres (46 miles) east of the Taj Mahal city of Agra on Tuesday evening, police said.
"As per post mortem reports we have 63 dead as of now," Firozabad police superintendent Navneet Kumar Rana told AFP.
The dead include many women and children, he said.
About 100 passengers were on board the bus returning from a religious celebration when the accident occurred.
India has the highest annual road death toll in the world.
