• Anna Faris keeps formulaic "Bunny" hopping

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It might wear its derivative, "Legally Blonde"-meets-"Mean Girls" trappings

  like a rhinestone thong, but strip away the second-hand attire, and "The House Bunny" still manages to stand on its own two skyscraper heels thanks to the comic force of nature that is Anna Faris.

  While her title character -- a former Playboy Bunny who becomes house mother to a sorry sorority -- borrows liberally from Judy Holliday and Marilyn Monroe, Faris also makes it her own in an irrepressible turn that's hard to resist.

  That performance should handily extend Columbia's summer comedy winning streak in a vehicle that plays to males and females, packing some real sleeper potential. The studio releases the film Friday (August 22).

  Faris, who strutted her comic stuff in such movies as "Lost in Translation" and the "Scary Movie" franchise, as well as on "Friends" as the surrogate mother of Monica and Chandler's baby, goes for the gold here as the clueless Shelley, who's one of Hugh Hefner's favorites (and Hef's on hand to prove it) until she's turfed from the Playboy Mansion upon turning 27.

  That's, like, 59 in Bunny years, Shelley's told, and she briefly finds herself out on the street before landing a gig transforming the socially challenged residents of the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority house into bona fide babes.

  In the process, while spouting words of wisdom like "My heart was pounding like a nail," she learns a thing or two from the sisters about the importance of being true to yourself.

  If the formula sounds awfully familiar, at least writers Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith elected to rip themselves off, having penned "Legally Blonde."

  Although moments of inspiration are few and far between, director Fred Wolf (in a vast improvement over his first feature, "Strange Wildnerness"), keeps things bouncing along at an agreeable pace, while allowing Faris plenty of wiggle room.

  She's unmistakably the main attraction -- and her hysterical habit of repeating the names of new people she meets in a low growl that summons up "The Exorcist" is destined to become the picture's calling card.

  Providing capable backup is a supporting cast including celebrity offspring Colin Hanks and Rumer Willis. "Bunny" also boasts especially amusing turns from "Superbad's" Emma Stone (registering early Lindsay Lohan) as the Zetas' unofficial leader and Kat Dennings as her glib, heavily pierced sorority sister.

  he funny bombshell has landed the cover of the men's magazine for two reasons: She stars as a Playboy Bunny who moves into a sorority house in the upcoming comedy The House Bunny, and, well, she's friggin' hot!

  But Faris, 31, wasn't always so confident about her looks...

  "I felt unattractive, short and self-conscious about my body, and I would purposely emphasize that by doing odd things," she tells the magazine (it hits newsstands on Friday) about her teenage years. "I wore glasses, braces, odd hairdos and dumpy clothes...When I was a freshman I wore a Christmas-tree skirt as a cape. I couldn't get any dates until senior year."

  While Faris doesn't appear nude in Playboy, she actually told me recently she was definitely tempted to strip down for the mag.

  "I felt really sexy," she told me of the shoot. "I found myself totally getting into it. I was like, 'Let's just take it all off.' " (Her publicist convinced her otherwise.)

  No surprise, but Faris wears body-bearing barely there outfits for most of the flick.

  "I was working out hard," Faris said about getting in shape for the flick. "My boyfriend was like, 'Baby, you got to eat. You're losing your butt.' "

  The House Bunny is the first full-length feature allowed to shoot at Hugh Hefner's legendary Playboy Mansion. "It was my first time there," Faris said. "It was surreal. There were randomly placed jars of baby oil but no babies that I knew of…It was great: peacocks, monkeys, hot girls and old men in pajamas! It was awesome."

• Rumer Willis joins the "family business"

  LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When she first set foot on a movie set as a child, Rumer Willis, daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis,

  knew she wanted to be a part of the "family business," even though she didn't fit the image of a Hollywood celebrity.

  The young actress, who turned 20 on Saturday, is a self-proclaimed dork and computer nerd -- traits that helped her develop her character in her first adult role in "The House Bunny," which debuts in theaters on Friday.

  "I had braces and glasses and a big curly 'fro," Willis recently told reporters about her appearance as a kid in Los Angeles. "I wasn't necessarily too active in getting into the social crowd, so I definitely understand not fitting in."

  "The House Bunny," written by Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz of "Legally Blonde" fame, is about a Playboy bunny who is kicked out of the legendary Playboy Mansion and makes it her mission to help the members of the least popular sorority on a college campus regain their self-confidence.

  Willis plays one of the sorority sisters, Joanne, an introvert in a back brace with very low self-esteem.

  "Joanne has always hidden behind her brace," Willis said. "Even though she doesn't need it anymore, it's kept her from having to show the world her true self."

  This is not Willis' movie debut, but it does mark her first high-profile mature role.

  Prior to this, Willis had primarily been a child actress with small roles in a few of her parents' movies, including "Hostage" and "The Whole Nine Yards," which starred her father, and "Striptease," starring her mom.

  Even when she didn't work on her parents' movies, Willis said she hung around the sets because she liked the atmosphere and people, but she added that she always felt more like an "accessory" than a member of the production.

  Willis' name is expected to attract audiences to "House Bunny," which has raised the stakes for the young actress.

  "It's been a very different experience to be on my own," Willis said.

  There is more to come for young Willis. She appears in the upcoming comedy "Wild Cherry," a dark drama "Whore," and "Slightly Single in L.A."

  It has not gone unnoticed in Hollywood that her appearance has changed to fit her burgeoning career. In May, Willis made People magazine's list of 100 most beautiful celebrities.

  "After being compared to Jay Leno for so long, you don't think of yourself that way," she told Page Six Magazine earlier this month. Leno is the U.S. talk show host who is often chided about the size of his chin.
